Maugh’s surface is covered with moist swamps, wet marshlands and vibrant forests. Due to its incredibly fertile marsh soils, Maugh is a regular site for alien colonists or farmers searching for a viable place to grow their crops and raise their animals. However, only the most experienced farmers are advised to live on the planet long-term, as the planet’s nitrogen-rich atmosphere allows various crops to grow to extreme volumes if left unchecked. As a result, certain areas of the planet have been abandoned, with the native Maughans labeling these regions as “the un-cultivated”. These areas, choked by the perpetual wild growth of failed harvests, are no longer suitable for settlement of any kind.
Maugh is a medium-sized swampy planet located near the Middle Rim of the Galaxy. Often sought out by eager colonists and hopeful intergalactic farmers, Maugh is a lush and fertile world rich with life. Home to the versatile, tranquil, and commercially savvy Maughan, the planet has been a haven for multiple species for hundreds of generations.
The Maughan (MOW-gan)
Maughan culture is centered around the cultivation of crops and animals alike alongside creating harmony with one’s neighbors. The Maughan cosmetology and pantheon is home to multiple deities centered around fertility, growth, harmony, peace, and balance. There are a myriad of Maughan clanships, who seek patronage from a specific deity. However, due to the establishment of multiple agricultural colonies across the planet’s landscape, Maughans have begun to mistrust any new colonists or farmers coming to the planet. Many inexperienced farmers have lost control of their harvests and created what the Maughan have come to call the “the un-cultivated” zones, where non-native crops have run wild and grown to ridiculous sizes, rendering the areas useless for settlement or additional planting.
Due to the creation of these unhabitable zones and the spreading of invasive species across the planet, Maughans hold intense distrust for any species who do not hold distinct kinship ties with any of the local Maughan clans. Moreover, any of the colonial families who do not have these clear ties are also viewed with suspicion, as too many alien colonists have exploited the trust of the Maughan and their planet’s natural resources with no regard for the safety and health of the planet. In short, unless one can prove their connections to the planet, outsiders are not welcome to remain on Maugh for extended periods of time.
Maughan Criminal Justice
Maugh’s moon, Harmoloné, is the purgatory for all those who have angered the Maughan clans. Those who have wronged any of the prominent Maughan families are given a choice—either leave the Maughan system and never return under punishment of death or opt for eternal banishment to the tundra moon. There, exiled criminals are stripped of all but the most rudimentary technologies and forced to scrounge the land to survive.
After an indeterminate amount of time living on the moon, the exiled are offered a chance for redemption. If the exiled can prove that they have lived a prosperous and harmonious life despite the adversity of basic technology and an unforgiving environment, they are granted their freedom from Harmoloné and are allowed to rejoin Maughan society on the main planet. These restrictions, despite being unforgiving, have not stopped Maughan criminals from returning to the planet illegally with the help of intergalactic traders or pirates. Thus, a secretive social class composed of illegal immigrants, pirates, and traders sporadically roam across Maugh’s surface, doing their best to avoid the prying gaze of the Maughan clans.
